THE CREW
Tyler
Captain / Owner
Growing up on the waters of the Pacific Northwest, Tyler has been sailing practically since birth. He was a competitive sailor in junior sailing programs, as well as collegiate sailing at the University of Hawaiʻi. He got his captain’s license in 2005 and began to make his passion his livelihood. He has since sailed more than enough ocean miles to have circumnavigated the globe.
Cassandra
Office Manager / Runs The Show
Cass came to Tahoe Sailing Charters as an office manager and quickly became the mastermind behind the operation. She excels at customer service and attention to detail and she works hard to plan the perfect outings for all of our guests. We couldn’t run our boats without her.
Mike
Captain / Owner
Mike grew up sailing in Southern California, then moved to Tahoe after college to raise a family. He was so passionate about sailing that he decided to make it his job. Mike founded the original Tahoe Sailing Charters with a different boat more than 20 years ago and is still an integral part of the team.
Tim
Captain
Tim first came to us as a deckhand years ago, but he quickly worked his way up to captain status. He has sailed all over the world, but he has called Tahoe home for most of his adult life. So if you want to know fun facts about the lake, he’s your guy. His knowledge of the region goes unmatched.
Frequently Asked
- ✓ When should I get there? We ask that you please arrive at our office 15 minutes prior to your scheduled departure. Please sign our online waiver before arriving (via our website - button linked in the menu). There is always traffic throughout the Tahoe basin so please add in extra time to travel here. We always leave right on time.
✓ Are kids allowed? Yes, we love kids aboard the boat (we may even let them help us sail!) and we have life jackets for every size. Our youth pricing is for kids under 12—and that applies to infants as well. Even though they take up very little space on the boat, the U.S. Coast Guard counts every person onboard toward our passenger manifest capacity, therefore, we must charge even for babies.
✓ What about sunscreen? Spray sunscreen has become widely used, but is not recommended for use on the boat. With the common wind conditions, it is not very effective. If it is all you have, it is much better used on shore before we take off.
✓ Where do I park? Our office is located in the Tahoe City Marina, at 700 N. Lake Boulevard in Tahoe City, California. Parking is limited, so we recommend arriving early to give yourself a good chance to get a spot in the marina parking lot. If that’s full, you can find parking at the Boatworks Mall nearby.
✓ What should I bring with me? Pack a warm layer for when the wind picks up or the sun dips down. You’ll also want a water bottle, study shoes, sunscreen, and your camera. Leave your sun hat behind—it may blow away with a gust.
✓ Can I bring my own food and drink? All of our cruises include beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. Please feel free to bring your own water bottle! Due to the current state with COVID, we will not be serving our complimentary appetizers on our Sunset cruises. We do provide appetizers on private trips and we are happy to work with you to arrange for more involved catering and specialty drink options.
✓ Do you accept tips? Tipping is appreciated but not required. A standard tip for a couple is around $20, if you consider that the captain and crew are keeping you safe and comfortable and pouring you drinks for a two-hour cruise. We aim to please. If you’re pleased, the tip jar will be present on your way off the boat. Private trips include a standard gratuity in the booking price.
✓ Is there a bathroom on the boat? We’re not savages! Yes, there is a bathroom on the boat but we always advise using the restroom before we get on the boat because why not! Bathroom is located behind our shop behind the double doors.
✓ What are your COVID-19 practices? We have adjusted our schedule to create smaller trip sizes throughout the day and have added in more times to accommodate as many guests as possible. In addition to enhanced cleaning protocols with hand sanitizer provided upon entering the boat and in the head we have eliminated our typical appetizer offerings for the time being. Masks are required upon arrival at our shop and while boarding the boat. Once we start sailing masks can come off but we ask that you be respectful of those around you. We require that when you are walking around the boat or going down below to the head that you put your mask on. Your health and safety is our number one priority.
